Le martin-p\u00eacheur malachite de Madagascar est un tout petit oiseau, \u00e0 peine plus grand qu\u2019un pouce humain. Son plumage bleu roi et orange vif scintille comme un bijou lorsqu\u2019il vole au-dessus des marais, des rizi\u00e8res ou des berges tranquilles des rivi\u00e8res de l\u2019\u00eele. Sa t\u00eate porte une couronne turquoise, et son long bec lui sert d\u2019outil de p\u00eache.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pour se nourrir, il reste immobile sur un roseau, l\u2019\u0153il fix\u00e9 sur l\u2019eau claire. Quand un alevin ou un t\u00eatard passe, il plonge comme une fl\u00e8che, saisit sa proie, puis remonte aussit\u00f4t pour la d\u00e9guster. Son vol est rapide et droit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le couple de malachite creuse un tunnel horizontal dans une berge sableuse, parfois jusqu\u2019\u00e0 un m\u00e8tre de long. Tout au fond, la cavit\u00e9 garde les \u0153ufs \u00e0 l\u2019abri des pr\u00e9dateurs et de la chaleur. Les deux parents se relaient pour couver puis nourrir les oisillons jusqu\u2019\u00e0 leur premier vol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parce qu\u2019il a besoin d\u2019eaux propres et de berges intactes, le martin-p\u00eacheur malachite nous avertit de la sant\u00e9 des rivi\u00e8res. Prot\u00e9ger les zones humides, \u00e9viter de jeter des d\u00e9chets dans l\u2019eau et planter des arbres pr\u00e8s des cours d\u2019eau l\u2019aident \u00e0 continuer de briller dans les paysages de Madagascar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
